Egilsstaðir 1 is an old settlement located close to the bank of the river Þjórsá in the district of Árnessýsla. Ancient sources claim the viking Þórainn had claimed his land here even before the year 930. Around 1200 there was a house here for old norse religious practices.

The river Þjórsá is Iceland´s largest and longest glacial river. It is 230 km in length and carries 400 m3 of water per second.

Until around 1895 Egilsstaðir 1 was one of the numerous points to cross the river by ferry. Egilsstaðir 1 belongs to the community Villingarholtshreppur with approx. 200 inhabitants. As the farm is standing on a small hillock, you have a fantastic view to the volcano Hekla, the glacier Eyjafjallajökull and the Westman Islands.
